Brownstown Dental Care ESTEEM Dental Implants

Throughout time medicine has evolved, and this evolution has affected dental implantology. It isn´t news that each day more people who used to wear dentures now opt for dental implants. And here is why.

First, what is it?

A dental implant is a metallic screw shaped post, generally made with titanium. What is so special about it? In fact, the implant is placed in the jawbone through an incision in the gums.

After it is placed, and after 3 to 6 months of healing this screw will work like an anchor replacing the missing tooth root. During that time, a process called osseointegration takes place, where the bone and the screw fuse together. This gives support and a strong base for the abutment and the crown.

The abutment is a piece that connects the post with the crown, which will be specially crafted so that it shares the other teeth color and shape.

And that is the reason why it is special, it not only feels, but it also looks and works like a real tooth. Plus, if you take good care of them, they could last a lifetime.

The two types

The previously described implants are not the only ones available, however. These are the so-called endosteal implants. The others, less frequently used, are the subperiosteal implants. The difference is that while the first ones are placed inside your jawbone, the subperiosteal ones are placed between your jaw and your gum tissue

The special cases when dentists recommend this type of implant, is when the jawbone is not healthy enough to osseointegrate with the titanium screw, when the shape doesn’t support the surgery and the posts insercion or the jaw has suffered bone loss.

This process needs two interventions, in the first one, an incision is made to make a mold of your jawbone. In the second one, the mold will be placed onto the bone and the cut will be closed.

As mentioned before, thanks to different techniques and treatments, this last kind of implant has become less necessary.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of endosteal implants are quite a lot, and that is the reason why so many people chose them.

  • Last longer
  • Natural and comfortable
  • Look and feel like natural teeth
  • High success rate
  • Improve chewing
  • Help restore self esteem

But as with any surgical procedure it can have some disadvantages.

  • Swelling and pain
  • Long time procedure
  • High costs

It is easy to realize that for some, dental implants might have high costs and the procedure takes a while. But having implants that last, are comfortable and natural, is worthy.
