Preventive Dental Care in Woodhaven, MI

We picture a world where most dental work never has to happen.

The Care That Keeps You Out of the Dental Chair

You deserve a dental team that’s invested in keeping you healthy, not just fixing problems.

That’s a real distinction. At Brownstown Dental Care, preventive dentistry isn’t a checkbox at the start of an appointment — it’s the core of how we practice. We measure success by how rarely our patients need major treatment, and every hygiene appointment is designed with that goal in mind.

The math behind preventive care is straightforward. A cavity caught at the first-cleaning stage is a five-minute filling. Left alone for a year, it may need a root canal and a crown. Left alone longer, it may require extraction and an implant. The cost — in time, money, and discomfort — compounds every time treatment gets delayed. We’d rather you never need to find that out firsthand.

Our Preventive Dental Services

We offer a comprehensive suite of preventive services for patients of all ages. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

Comprehensive Exams

A thorough dental exam is the diagnostic foundation of preventive care. We check every tooth for early signs of decay, evaluate gum tissue health, screen for oral cancer, and assess the bite and jaw joints. New patients receive a full comprehensive exam; returning patients get a thorough re-evaluation every six months. Early detection is everything — the conditions we find and treat in their early stages are a fraction of the cost and complexity of treating them later.

Professional Cleanings (Prophylaxis)

Even thorough daily brushing and flossing leaves behind deposits that only professional instruments can remove. Tartar (calcified plaque) forms in the hardest-to-reach spots and provides a surface where bacteria thrive, damaging both teeth and gum tissue. Our hygiene team performs gentle but thorough cleanings at every visit, including polishing and plaque removal in areas your toothbrush simply can’t reach. Most patients are on a twice-yearly schedule; patients with a history of gum disease may benefit from quarterly cleanings.

Digital X-Rays

Cavities, bone loss, cysts, impacted teeth, and early infections are invisible to the naked eye. Digital radiographs let us see what’s happening inside and between teeth, beneath the gumline, and within the jawbone — with significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays. For patients with higher decay risk or active gum disease, we may recommend more frequent X-rays to monitor changes closely. For most healthy adults, a full set every three to five years and bitewing X-rays annually is appropriate.

Oral Cancer Screening

Every exam at Brownstown Dental Care includes a visual oral cancer screening at no additional cost. We examine the lips, tongue, cheeks, palate, floor of the mouth, and the soft tissues of the throat for any lesions, unusual patches, or tissue changes that warrant follow-up. Oral cancer has a high survival rate when caught early, but its outcomes worsen significantly with delayed detection. Two minutes at every appointment can make an outsized difference.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and reverses very early-stage cavity formation — a process called remineralization. Professional fluoride applications are recommended for children as a standard preventive measure, and for adults who are cavity-prone or have a history of frequent decay. The fluoride we use in-office is significantly more concentrated than what’s in toothpaste, and the application takes less than a minute.

Dental Sealants

The back molars have deep grooves on their chewing surfaces that are nearly impossible to clean completely — they’re exactly the right size to trap food and harbor bacteria. Dental sealants are a thin, protective resin coating painted into those grooves and hardened in place. For children, sealants on permanent molars dramatically reduce the risk of early cavities on those surfaces. Sealants are quick, painless, and highly effective as part of a preventive program for young patients.

Periodontal (Gum Disease) Monitoring

Gum disease begins silently — with no pain in early stages — and progresses to the point of irreversible bone loss if not caught and treated. We measure periodontal pocket depths at every exam, track changes over time, and intervene early with scaling and root planing (a deep-cleaning procedure below the gumline) when needed. Patients with a history of gum disease are typically placed on a more frequent hygiene recall schedule to stay ahead of recurrence. Personalized Hygiene Education

One of the most underestimated parts of a preventive appointment is the conversation. Our hygienists take the time to review your actual brushing and flossing technique — not just remind you to do it, but show you where you’re missing and help you improve. We also talk through diet and lifestyle factors that affect your oral health, whether that’s coffee, dry mouth from medications, acidic beverages, or anything else in your day-to-day routine. Small adjustments in daily habits have compounding effects on long-term oral health.

Preventive Care as a Long-Term Investment

The patients who fare best over a lifetime of dental health are rarely the ones who had the best genetics — they’re the ones who showed up consistently, caught things early, and worked with a dental team that took the time to understand their individual risk factors.

At Brownstown Dental Care, we track your oral health over time. We know your history. We remember which areas tend to be vulnerable for you, which surfaces accumulate tartar fastest, and which lifestyle factors put you at higher risk for certain conditions. That longitudinal knowledge — built over years of seeing the same patients — is something no urgent-care dental chain can replicate.

Dr. Ben Hanson built this practice around a simple commitment: honest, high-quality, evidence-based dental care in a comfortable environment that’s accessible to the community. Preventive dentistry is where that commitment is most directly expressed. For most of our patients, the goal is a lifetime of healthy teeth with minimal major intervention. We take that goal seriously.
