Children’s Dental Care in Woodhaven, MI

We believe in gentle hands for small mouths.

A Dental Visit Your Child Doesn’t Have to Dread

Because every child deserves a dental home that feels safe.

That’s a standard we hold ourselves to at Brownstown Dental Care, because we know that a child’s first few dental experiences shape how they feel about dental care for the rest of their life. A positive, gentle, unhurried visit at age two looks like a confident adult who keeps their appointments at forty. A scary or rushed experience at the same age can lead to decades of avoidance and the dental problems that come with it.

We’ve spent more than a decade caring for children in Woodhaven, Brownstown Township, and throughout the Downriver area. Our team is experienced with young patients, comfortable with wiggly two-year-olds and nervous ten-year-olds alike, and genuinely invested in making every visit something your child can feel okay about — maybe even look forward to.

When Should My Child First See the Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental visit by their first birthday — or within six months of the first tooth appearing. That might feel early, but it’s purposeful. The first visit is less about cleaning and more about establishing a baseline, answering parent questions, and letting your child meet the team in a completely low-pressure environment.

Early visits let us catch developmental concerns, talk through teething and bottle habits, and make sure primary (baby) teeth are coming in correctly. Primary teeth matter more than most parents realize — they hold space for permanent teeth, support speech development, and allow normal chewing function during some of the most critical years of a child’s growth.

If your child is older and has never seen a dentist, that’s okay. There’s no judgment here. We’ll start wherever your child is, take things at their pace, and build from there.

Children’s Dental Services We Provide

As a family dental practice, we provide the full range of dental care for children in the same office where their parents and grandparents receive care. There’s no need to visit a separate pediatric dental specialist for routine care and most restorative needs.

Infant and Toddler Dental Exams

First visits for infants and toddlers are gentle and brief. We take a look at the gums and any teeth that have emerged, talk through oral development milestones, and answer parent questions about teething, thumb-sucking, pacifiers, and proper cleaning technique for tiny teeth. These early visits are as much about parent education as they are about the child’s teeth.

Children’s Cleanings and Check-Ups

Starting around age three, most children are ready for a full preventive cleaning visit. Our hygienists are experienced at working with young, sometimes fidgety patients — they know how to explain what they’re doing in terms that make sense to a child, and they take whatever time is needed to keep the experience calm. Check-ups include an exam of all teeth, assessment of bite development, and a review of brushing habits.

Dental Sealants

Permanent molars typically erupt around age six and twelve. The deep grooves on their chewing surfaces are prime locations for cavities, even in children who brush well. Dental sealants — a thin protective coating applied to those surfaces — dramatically reduce cavity risk in the most vulnerable areas. The application is quick, painless, and highly effective. We recommend sealants as soon as first and second permanent molars erupt.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride strengthens developing tooth enamel and reverses the earliest stages of cavity formation. Professional fluoride applications take less than a minute and provide protection well beyond what fluoride toothpaste alone can offer. Recommended at every preventive visit for children through their teenage years.

Digital X-Rays for Children

We use digital X-ray technology that produces accurate diagnostic images with significantly less radiation than traditional film-based X-rays. For children, X-rays let us monitor tooth development, check for cavities between teeth, and identify any issues with eruption patterns before they become problems. Frequency is calibrated to your child’s cavity risk and developmental stage.

Cavity Treatment

When cavities do occur, we treat them with tooth-colored fillings that match the natural appearance of the tooth. Primary teeth with significant decay may need a stainless steel crown to protect the remaining structure until the tooth naturally falls out. We use topical anesthetics before any injection and explain every step in child-friendly language so nothing catches your child off guard.

Sports Mouthguards for Young Athletes

Custom-fitted mouthguards provide far better protection than anything from a sporting goods store. If your child plays football, hockey, lacrosse, basketball, or any contact sport, a properly fitted mouthguard is one of the most important pieces of protective equipment they can have. We fabricate these from impressions of your child’s actual teeth for a precise, comfortable fit.

Orthodontic Referrals

We monitor bite development and tooth alignment at every exam. When we observe patterns that suggest orthodontic intervention may be appropriate — such as significant crowding, crossbite, overbite, or delayed eruption — we’ll have an honest conversation about timing and provide a referral to a trusted orthodontic partner.

Our Approach to Children’s Dental Anxiety

Dental anxiety in children is real, common, and entirely understandable. A lot of it comes from the unfamiliar — strange sounds, new faces, equipment that looks more intimidating than it is. Our team is practiced at slowing things down, explaining what’s happening at every step, and never rushing through an appointment just to stay on schedule.

For children with significant anxiety or a strong gag reflex, we may discuss nitrous oxide (laughing gas) as a mild sedation option. Nitrous oxide is safe, has a long track record in pediatric dentistry, and wears off within minutes of the mask being removed. It takes the edge off without putting the child to sleep, and most children who try it respond well to it.

Our team includes Dr. Jacob Palmer, DMD, who earned the Horace Wells Senior Student Award for dental anesthesiology during his training and has a particular focus on making dental care comfortable for anxious patients of all ages. Dr. Brian Vu, DMD is known for building long-term relationships with patients across all age groups and for his patient, thorough approach with children and families.
