Dr. Hanson - Does It Hurt To Get Dental Implants?

A lot of my patients ask, “Does it hurt to get dental implants?” Well, a dental implant procedure is a minor surgical process, so it’s not unusual to experience some discomfort afterward. We provide medication to manage any pain, but it’s generally not very invasive. The procedure typically involves numbing the tissues and placing the dental implant, which can take as little as five minutes in many cases. Moderate postoperative pain is normal.

Most of my patients go back to work within a day or two. Additionally, for patients who are afraid of the dentist or prefer not to be awake during the procedure, we offer IV sedation. We often put our patients to sleep, complete all their dental work while they are asleep, and they wake up with everything done. They don’t remember the procedure, and it’s a very smooth experience.

If you’re getting a full set of teeth with dental implants, what can you expect afterward? That’s a great question. Since it is a surgical procedure, you will have some discomfort, but you’ll wake up with brand-new teeth. These teeth are permanent and don’t come in and out; they function just like natural teeth. Over the course of several weeks, your gums will heal, pain will subside, and inflammation will go down. Eventually, you won’t experience any pain.

Though it is a surgical procedure, it’s not highly invasive. I have patients who return to work the next day, while some prefer to take the weekend off. Extensive discomfort after a dental implant procedure is very uncommon.

Does It Hurt to Get Dental Implants? Dr. Ben Hanson from Brownstown Dental Care Explains

One of the most common questions Dr. Ben Hanson hears from patients considering dental implants is, “Does it hurt to get dental implants?” While it is a surgical procedure, dental implants are surprisingly less invasive than many might think. At Brownstown Dental Care, Dr. Hanson ensures that every step of the process is as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

What to Expect During the Procedure

A dental implant procedure involves placing a small titanium post into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. Though it sounds complex, the procedure itself is relatively minor. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Numbing the Area: The first step is to numb the surrounding tissue. This ensures that you won’t feel any pain during the procedure.
  • Quick Placement: In many cases, placing the implant can take as little as five minutes, making it a quick and efficient process.
  • Mild Post-Operative Discomfort: After the procedure, some moderate discomfort is normal, as with any surgery. However, Dr. Hanson provides medication to help manage any pain and ensure a smooth recovery.

Minimal Downtime

One of the key advantages of dental implants is the relatively fast recovery time. Many patients are able to return to work within a day or two. Dr. Hanson reassures patients that, while some soreness and inflammation are to be expected, the pain is typically mild and subsides within a few days. It’s not unusual for patients to experience only moderate post-operative discomfort, which is manageable with over-the-counter or prescribed medications.

Sedation Options for a Comfortable Experience

For patients who may be anxious about the procedure or simply prefer not to be awake, Brownstown Dental Care offers IV sedation. This allows patients to sleep through the entire process and wake up with their new teeth already in place. It’s an excellent option for those who may have a fear of the dentist or want the procedure to be as stress-free as possible. Dr. Hanson and his team perform sedation regularly, ensuring a seamless and comfortable experience from start to finish.

What Happens After the Procedure?

After getting dental implants, patients often wonder what to expect in terms of healing and recovery. Dr. Hanson explains that, while there is some discomfort immediately following the procedure, it is generally minimal. Patients often experience mild swelling and tenderness for a few days, but these symptoms quickly subside.

In fact, many patients are back to their normal routines the next day or, at most, take the weekend off to recover. Once the healing process is complete, patients can enjoy their new implants, which feel and function just like natural teeth. They don’t come in and out like dentures, offering a permanent and reliable solution for missing teeth.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Dental implants are one of the most effective solutions for missing teeth, providing long-term stability and a natural look. Unlike dentures or bridges, implants are rooted in the jawbone, ensuring they don’t shift or move over time. This makes them an excellent choice for patients looking for a durable, comfortable, and permanent replacement for lost teeth.

At Brownstown Dental Care, Dr. Hanson is experienced in performing dental implant procedures with precision and care, ensuring that patients experience minimal discomfort and excellent results.
