Teeth Whitening Options at Brownstown Dental Care with our dental team
If you’re interested in teeth whitening, we offer this service in-office at Browntown Dental. First, we determine why your teeth have discolored. This could be due to the normal aging process, intrinsic staining, or cavities causing discoloration. We like to start with a consultation to address the reason for the discoloration.
We provide in-office whitening using the Zoom system, and we also offer at-home whitening. For at-home whitening, we create custom trays, and you purchase whitening gel syringes to use at home.
Zoom whitening involves using the Zoom light and takes about two hours, so plan to be in our office for a while. The procedure is performed by our hygienist, and you’ll notice immediate results. This option is great for patients with upcoming events where they want their teeth to look particularly white.
Additionally, we offer at-home whitening so you can continue to maintain your results. Whitening is not permanent, so you need to commit to ongoing treatments. Typically, Zoom whitening should be redone every two years to maintain results.
Whitening is a completely safe procedure and the least invasive method to improve the aesthetics of your teeth. We don’t drill or change anything structurally; we only change the color. Occasionally, patients may experience sensitivity with whitening. If this happens, we can use a lower concentration of the whitening agent.
If you have periodontal disease or gum issues, in-office whitening is better because we can block out the gum tissue to ensure the whitening product only affects the teeth. Whitening is not damaging to the teeth; the main side effect is sensitivity. If you have sensitive teeth, let us know, and we’ll find a whitening solution for you.
Why Most People Give Up on Whitening Too Early
Teeth whitening is one of the most requested cosmetic dental services, and also one of the most frequently tried at home with disappointing results. Patients spend money on strips, trays, and whitening toothpastes, see limited change, and conclude that whitening either does not work well or simply will not work for their teeth. That conclusion is often wrong.
The issue in most cases is not that whitening cannot work. It is that over-the-counter products have regulatory limits on the concentration of whitening agent they can contain. That limit exists for safety reasons, but it also means the products are not as effective as what a dental office can provide. At Brownstown Dental Care in Woodhaven, professional whitening uses prescription-strength concentrations that produce results the consumer products cannot match.
Why Over-the-Counter Products Underdeliver
Whitening toothpastes work primarily through mild abrasion and low-concentration whitening agents. They can help maintain a shade but rarely change it significantly. Whitening strips use a higher concentration than toothpastes, but they are designed for one-size coverage that often does not fit the contours of actual teeth well. Areas that are not in full contact with the strip see minimal or uneven whitening.
At-home trays from the store have similar contact problems. The pre-formed trays are not molded to the individual patient’s teeth, which means the whitening gel contacts some surfaces well and others poorly. The result is often uneven, with some teeth visibly brighter than adjacent ones. This is not what patients are aiming for and it contributes to the perception that whitening does not work.
What Professional Whitening Changes
Professional whitening at Brownstown Dental Care is available as either an in-office treatment or a custom take-home kit. Both use prescription-strength whitening gel at concentrations not available in consumer products.
The take-home option uses custom trays fabricated from impressions of the patient’s teeth. Because the trays fit precisely, the gel contacts all surfaces evenly. Patients wear them for a prescribed period each day over one to two weeks, with most seeing a change of several shades. The trays and any remaining gel can be used for periodic touch-ups after the initial treatment.
The in-office option concentrates the treatment into a single appointment. A higher-concentration gel is applied in a controlled environment, and the results are visible immediately. Most patients who use in-office treatment see a significant shade change in one session. This option is particularly popular for patients preparing for an event or who want faster results.
Who Benefits Most From Professional Whitening
Whitening works best on extrinsic staining, the discoloration that accumulates on the outer surface of teeth from food, drinks, and age. Coffee and tea drinkers, red wine drinkers, and smokers all tend to have meaningful extrinsic staining that responds well to whitening treatment. Patients whose teeth have yellowed or dulled over time from general aging also see good results.
The best candidates have otherwise healthy teeth and gums without active decay or gum disease. Whitening is not a substitute for those treatments and should be done after any needed dental work is addressed.
What Whitening Cannot Fix
Not every form of discoloration responds to whitening, and understanding this upfront prevents disappointment. Intrinsic stains, which develop inside the tooth from antibiotics taken during childhood, excessive fluoride, or injury, are not affected by peroxide-based whitening. These cases typically require veneers or bonding to change the appearance.
Dental work, including crowns, veneers, and bonding material, does not whiten with bleaching agents. If a patient has visible restorations in the smile zone, whitening the natural teeth around them can create a color mismatch. Dr. Hanson discusses this during the consultation so patients understand what to expect from the specific work they want done.
What About Sensitivity?
Some patients experience tooth sensitivity during or after whitening treatment. This is the most common side effect and it is temporary. The sensation typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours after treatment stops. Patients who already have sensitive teeth are more likely to notice it, but sensitivity during whitening does not mean the process is damaging the teeth.
Brownstown Dental Care uses desensitizing agents as part of the whitening protocol for patients who are concerned about sensitivity. Potassium nitrate-based products applied before or after treatment help minimize the response. For patients using the take-home system, reducing wear time per session and extending the treatment over a longer period is another way to manage it while still achieving the full result.
How Long Results Last
Whitening results are not permanent, but they are maintainable. Most patients who complete a professional whitening course see results that hold well for one to three years, depending on diet and habits. Patients who regularly consume coffee, tea, red wine, or tobacco will see results fade more quickly than those who do not.
Touch-up treatments with the custom trays help extend and restore the result without starting the full protocol over. Patients who receive the custom trays as part of their initial treatment at Brownstown Dental Care can use any compatible whitening gel for maintenance, which makes ongoing results significantly more economical than the initial treatment.
What One Patient Said After Professional Whitening
One patient who had tried multiple whitening strips with minimal change described her results after two weeks with the custom tray system: “I honestly thought it was going to be like the strips, a little lighter and then back to the same color in a week. It was completely different. My teeth are noticeably whiter and they have stayed that way. I wish I had done this years ago.”
Patient names are withheld to protect privacy. The above is a real experience shared by a Brownstown Dental Care patient.
What Dr. Hanson Says About Starting With Whitening
“Whitening is often the first step patients ask about when they are thinking about improving their smile,” Dr. Hanson says. “If it is appropriate for what they want to achieve, it is a great place to start. It is the most straightforward change and it makes a visible difference quickly. For patients who want more than whitening can do, we talk through what the next steps look like from there.”
